You should never use personal information as a part of your password. It is very easy for someone to guess things like your last name, pet's name, child's birth date and other similar details.</li><br /><li>Do not use real words. There are tools available to help attackers guess your password. With today's computing power, it doesn't take long to try every word in the dictionary and find your password, so it is best if you do not use real words for your password.</li><br /><li>Mix different character types. You can make a password much more secure by mixing different types of characters. Use some uppercase letters along with lowercase letters, numbers and even special characters such as '&' or '%'.</li><br /><li>Use a passphrase. Rather than trying to remember a password created using various character types which is also not a word from the dictionary, you can use a passphrase. Think up a sentence or a line from a song or poem that you like and create a password using the first letter from each word.<br /><br />For example, rather than just having a password like 'yr$1Hes', you could take a sentence such as "I like to read the About.com Internet / Network Security web site" and convert it to a password like 'il2rtA!nsws". By substituting the number '2' for the word 'to' and using an exclamation point in place of the 'i' for 'Internet', you can use a variety of character types and create a secure password that is hard to crack, but much easier for you to remember.<br /></li><br /><li>Use a password management tool. Another way to store and remember passwords securely is to use some sort of password management tool. These tools maintain a list of usernames and passwords in encrypted form. Some will even automatically fill in the username and password information on sites and applications.</li><br /></ol><br />Using the tips above will help you create passwords that are more secure, but you should still also follow the following tips:<br /><br /><ul><li>Use different passwords. You should usea different username and password for each login or application you are trying to protect. That way if one gets compromised the others are still safe. Another approach which is less secure, but provides a fair tradeoff between security and convenience, is to use one username and password for sites and applications that don't need the extra security, but use unique usernames and more secure passwords on sites such as your bank or credit card companies.</li><br /><li>Change your passwords. You should change your password at least every 30 to 60 days. Best Performing Adsense Format

One of my sites is making decent money from Google Adsense, and it's receiving around 60,000 unique visitors per month. Let's look at the 3 main ways to increase Adsense revenue:</div><div><ol><li>Get more visitors. If 1.5% of my visitors click on the ads, increasing the number of visitors will increase the number of clickers. This site is experiencing traffic growth anyway, simply because I keep adding good content to an already authoritative site. For this reason, we won't consider increasing traffic here. That's part of my content creation strategy.</li><br /><li>Get higher paying advertisers to advertise on those Adsense blocks. The only way to do that is to write about more lucrative subjects to attract those high paying contextual ads or to exclude certain low paying advertisers from displaying on my site. Neither are feasible here.</li><br /><li>Improve the Adsense CTR. This is the one. The site is already receiving substantial traffic, so tweaking the CTR could lead to a nice little increase in earnings. Let's test some numbers.</li><br /></ol></div><div><b>How Much Effect Will An Increase In CTR Have?</b></div><div></div><div>Suppose the site is making $500 / month and the average CTR is 1.5%.If we can double the CTR to 3%, that will double the number of clicking visitors and will roughly double the Adsense revenue. Testing different Adsense formats is much easier than trying to increase traffic, too. It might take a few different ad format changes to double the CTR, but compare the time and effort that goes into creating those new ad formats (not much) with taking on the challenge of doubling the traffic and you'll see what the preferred option is. And I'm already striving to increase traffic anyway, by cramming more content into the site.</div><div></div><div><b>Crappy Conclusions</b></div><div></div><div>Well, the conclusion might be valid, but how I draw it certainly isn't. Based on a few hours of collecting clicks using my new Adsense format, I can report an increase in CTR from 1.9% (last month) to 4.2% (last 3 hours). If last month's revenue was $500 (it wasn't), then this month's will be around $1105. That 5 minute change is potentially worth $7,260 / year!</div><div></div><div>The old Adsense block size was 300 x 250, and it took me 5 minutes to replicate the colour scheme and select a new block size to test.</div><div></div><div><b>And the magic ad format I'm now using?</b></div><div></div><div>336 x 280 showing text and images. Behold - the ad size of the century! I'll be using this one everywhere now! And testing as we go, of course.</div><div></div><div>This just in: 24 hourse later and the CTR was 4.62% for the previous day. Talk to other people in your line of business to see what they are using and what they like and dislike about the program. Goldmine can be used to track both opportunities (proposals that you might have out and the status of the proposals) as well as active projects – especially helpful for consulting projects where multiple people may be involved.</li><br /><li><span style="font-style: italic;">Be sure you can easily use the names for direct mail and e-mail purposes. </span><br />The database program should have the capability to do merge mailings and e-mails to selected groups or the ability to export to other programs such as Excel so mail merges can be accomplished.</li><br /></ul>Invest in the technology and the assistance necessary to set-up a functional database system because this is one of the most valuable tools in constructing an effective marketing program.<br /><br />Feed the database on a regular basis. The best designed database with all the latest technological bells and whistles is useless if it doesn’t have any names in it. The primary objective of much of your promotional efforts should be obtaining contact information for individuals who fit the profile of your target customer. You can then enter this information into your database and begin the relationship development process with these individuals.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">So how can you feed your database?</span><br /><ul><li>Networking.<br />When you are networking be sure to ask for the cards of the people you meet who could be prospective customers. In fact, it is much more important to obtain their card than it is to give them your card.</li><br /><li><span style="font-style: italic;">Speaking. </span><br />When you speak or do presentations be sure you have a mechanism for obtaining the names of the people in attendance. A door prize is one good way to do this.</li><br /><li><span style="font-style: italic;">Writing. </span><br />If you write articles be sure to invite readers to your website to sign-up for your regular newsletter or a free guide.</li><br /><li><span style="font-style: italic;">Direct mail and advertising. </span><br />With a few exceptions, the goal of direct mail or advertising should not be to make a sale. It should be to obtain contact information so you can continue to market to those individuals who have shown an interest in your services. Therefore your promotional pieces should be designed to get a maximum number of people with even a slight interest in your services to provide you their contact information. Giving away a free guide is one excellent way to accomplish this.</li><br /></ul>Obviously once you have contact information it must be entered into the database. The 500 cards you collected through networking activities last year aren’t doing much good wrapped in a rubber band lying in desk drawer. If you get even a few business cards a week that need to be entered into the database it is well worth an investment in a card scanning program such as CardScan. Be sure the program you select allows export of the contact information to the contact database program you will be using. In fact, a program like CardScan could serve as the primary contact management system if you are just getting started. If adding names to your database is something you just never seem to get done the investment in some administrative support to accomplish this task can pay off handsomely.<br /><br />Consistently nurture the names in the database. A great database with hundreds or even thousands of names in it is useless unless you actually have contact with the names in the database. This is a topic for another article or even a whole book. At a minimum there should be follow-up with every contact shortly after you receive their contact information (i.e. a note or e-mail to someone you met at a networking event within a few days of meeting them) and regular, planned contact with them at least monthly going forward. With today’s technology much of this can be automated.<br /><br />Protect this valuable asset. Your contact database is one of your most valuable assets. Be sure you protect it. Do regular back-ups and store these back-ups off site. For about the cost of a week’s worth of Starbuck ’s coffee you can have all of your files backed up automatically each night and stored on a remote server. What would be the cost of replacing your contact database?<br /><br />Get your feet planted solidly in the sand. A morning run or a quick trip to the local store could be an opportunity to network. My wife and I always ask each other 'do you have business cards', before leaving the house. Make it a habit to carry business cards.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br /></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">2. Insert a business card when mailing bill payments. </span></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Bills contain advertisements. Why can't you advertise your skills or services the same way' Insert a business card with your payment. You may not think a person in South Dakota who opens your credit card bill payment can help you. Never underestimate the power of networking. A movie, entitled '6 Degrees of Separation' points out we are 6 people away from knowing someone of influence. You could be 6 people away from knowing the President of the United Sates, your favorite movie star or someone who is in a position to hire your skills or services. These comments will prove valuable when following up with that person. This  also demonstrates a sincere interest in the other person. Then place it in your wallet. This lets them know they reside in a special place with you. "Skill with People" by Les Giblin is a book that expands on this approach. I once asked a person for a second business card, so I could refer his services. His response was "I only have a few cards left and I need them", as he looked again at his name on the card. Hoarding your business cards only makes your wallet feel full, not your bank account.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br /></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">5. Ask for referrals. </span></div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">When giving a business card, people feel more comfortable when you ask; 'I would appreciate a referral, if you know anyone that could use my services'. Don't make people feel like they are on the spot. This approach disarms people much better than asking them, 'is your company hiring'' People naturally like to do favors for people. Saying 'could you do me a favor by referring my services to someone'. This always places you in a better position with them. They will feel better about helping you. Company representatives might view you differently, if they know you are willing to go the extra mile in helping them make their presence easier to manage.
